1. When was your club established at Georgia Southern and what is a tradition your team has?

Our club was established for the 2009-2010 school year. One tradition that the competition team has is going to Waffle House after practice. Last year, many of our members would go almost every night. This year, we have developed the tradition into Waffle House Tuesday. It’s a great time for our members to socialize and warm up after cold practices at night.

2. Why do you like playing club sports at Georgia Southern?

I like participating in club sports because it allows me to be a part of a team and to pursue my interests. I have been involved in archery for several years but coming to Southern and joining the archery club has allowed me to really get into the sport I love. I have learned so much more than I knew before, made more friends, been able to travel across the county, and I’ve become much more active with competitions and the university in general.

3. What is it like to travel and play different schools?

The Competition Team attends two main events during our tournament season, an indoor and outdoor tournament. At these tournaments, we compete against many other collegiate archery clubs and varsity teams. It is so much fun attending these events because you meet so many other archers from across the nation and strengthen friendships you already had. It’s great to see so many college-aged students involved in the sport. In addition to these two main tournaments, there are other local and state tournaments that members will attend on their own. At these tournaments, you can meet other archers vastly more experienced or knowledgeable than yourself, making more friendships and learning new skills.

4. What is your best memory while playing in tournaments this semester?

Last spring, the club traveled to Cedar City, Utah to participate in the United States Intercollegiate Archery Championships, which is the main outdoor tournament. It was so much fun meeting other archers. It was exhilarating to place as the first seed in the elimination bracket, and it was even more exciting when I went on to become a National Champion!

5. What if someone is interested in joining your team? How can they find out more information? Are there tryouts?

We run our membership on a semester basis. The archery club consists of two teams: Recreation and Competition. Recreation Team is geared for those who have little to no experience and no equipment. We provide equipment and instruction during our usually weekly practices. In order to be on Competition Team, one must have his/her own equipment and some experience. Competition Team practices multiple times a week and competes as a team at the Indoor and Outdoor US Collegiate Archery Tournaments as wellas other smaller tournaments. 6. Does your team have any special achievements? If so, what are they?

Last year, our club was Most Improved Club! This was quite an accomplishment as last year was the first year Recreation Team existed; the Competition Team also grew greatly in size. From last year to this year, our Recreation Team has stayed strong at 34 members this semester. We also doubled our active Competition Team member roster to 15 members. Our club is home to many National Champions, All-Academic and All-American honorees and many top ten archers.
