Fall 2015 Club Spotlight – Tennis

Congratulations to Tennis for being named a Club Sport of the Month in the Fall 2015 semester! Club president, Ashlee Charles, was interviewed and offered some great information about the club.

  1. When was your club established at Georgia Southern University and what is the tradition your team has?
    • Our Club was reactivated last Spring 2015 active after being inactive for three years and a tradition is to yell “GATA-GATA-GATA” and “HAIL SOUTHERN” really fast when we have victories and when we cheer each other on.
  2. Why do you like playing club sports at Georgia Southern University?
    • We enjoy playing Club Tennis at Georgia Southern, because we like to make sure everyone feels like a family. No matter is this is their first day of practice or they have been there everyday, we make sure they feel welcome. If they need help with learning a skills or how to improve their stroke, we all will do our best to help them out.
  3. What is it like to travel and play different schools?
    • Getting to travel and play with other schools like Harvard, Georgia, or West Virginia, is very rewarding. Not only do we get to meet and connect with other people from all over the United States, but we get to make life long friendships. Getting to play with other schools has taught us to not allow stereotypes to affect our opinion about them. Through getting to play with other schools, we have discovered they are college students just like us who want to have a great time and play some tennis.
  4. What is your best memory while playing in tournaments/competitions this semester?
    • Our best memory: At the Hilton Head Tournament, two of our players wore their hotel bathrobes to the courts while the other players played that day. The next day, other players from other schools wore their robes. I was afraid we would get penalized , but the Tournament Captain loved it! That is how everyone remembers Georgia Southern now. When I tell other schools the name of my school, other people will say “Oh, the school with the robe guys?! Awesome!”.
  5. How does someone go about joining your team?
    • To join our team, an individual just has to come talk to an officer about how practices run and then pay the club fee when they can.
  6. How can they find out more information? Are there tryouts?
    • To find out more information about our club, they can go to our MyInvolvement page. There are not any tryouts for the team. We welcome all skill levels.
  7. Does your team have any recent special achievements? If so, what are they?
    • Our most recent achievement: Both A & B teams defeated Armstrong State University!
