Georgia Southern Golf Course named ‘Best New Course’ by Golf Digest

Georgia Southern University is no stranger to national accolades and recently the University garnered one more when it was named to Golf Digest’s prestigious 2014 Best New Golf Courses list.

“This represents a number of things that speak loudly and boldly about what Georgia Southern is and where we are going,” said University President Brooks A. Keel, Ph.D. “We are a university on the move and are always looking for ways to better serve our students and community. This is one more way in which we can tell the world that we are different, and we are special.”

Since 1983, Golf Digest has been the leader in golf course rankings.  In the November issue, the Georgia Southern Golf Course ranks among major championship courses such as Trump National Golf Club in Doral, Florida, and Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson, Arizona.

Ron Whitten, editor of Golf Digest, said, “The Georgia Southern Golf Course is beautiful, playable and affordable. Using the old pine-lined corridors, the new course has instant maturity, with holes six through eight wrapping around a large glistening lake that is a particular highlight.”

“We are excited to offer Georgia Southern and the surrounding community a course recognized so prominently by Golf Digest,” said Marten Olsson, director of golf.  “The course will only improve with time thanks in large part to the efforts of course superintendent, Patrick Reinhart.”

“This is an opportunity for us to provide an experience to our students and community members and expose them to the game of golf,” said Gene Sherry, executive director of Campus Recreation & Intramurals.  “The course is a testament to the design of Bob Walker. It is both challenging and playable for all skill levels.”

The facility also has a driving range, practice putting and chipping greens, along with a renovated 8,000 square foot clubhouse, which includes a pro shop, snack bar and meeting space.

“This is what a student-centered university is all about,” said Teresa Thompson, Ph.D., vice president of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. “We have very bright students who have high expectations inside and outside the classroom.”
