Becoming an Approved User

Approved User Options

*Note: Is not necessary to be an approved user to enroll in an SSEC Safe Shooter course or lesson program.

Application Fee

$20 per person (Adults Only)

Applicants must complete the following forms at the SSEC:

  • Approved User Application
  • Assumption of Risk, Waiver of Liability, Indemnification Agreement
  • Consent for Background Investigation (Adults Only)

All patrons wishing to participate at the SSEC must become an “Approved User”

 

An individual may choose to become an approved user for:

  • Archery Center Only
  • Firearms Range Only
  • Both Archery & Firearms

*Note: It is not necessary to be an approved user to enroll in an SSEC Introductory Training Course or Program

*Note: The approved user fee is included in many of the introductory programs and classes offered

Approved User Process

  • Filling out approved user application and paying the associated fee if necessary.
  • Watching the Range Safety Briefing Video.
  • Written exam on SSEC range safety and procedures (Firearms, Archery, or Both).
  • A hands-on practical exam under the supervision of an SSEC official (Firearms, Archery, or Both).
  • A Background Check will be sent off and an applicant will be informed via email on the status of Background Check once it returns.

Patrons who are unable to pass either the written or practical exam (or both) will be required to take the Safe Shooter Training class in firearms, archery, or both to provide them with the skills, knowledge and attributes to become an Approved User. Upon successful completion of the course and passing a background check, the patron will become an Approved User. The original $20 Approved User Fee will be applied to the Safe Shooter Training class fee.

Age Restrictions

  1. Firing Range: Individuals must be 10 years or older to utilize the firing range. Individuals age 10 – 17 must be accompanied (within arm’s reach) by an adult who is an “Approved User” or an “Approved User – Firearms”. In addition, the individual must have written permission from a parent or guardian to use a handgun.
  1. Archery Center: Individuals must be 7 years or older to use the archery center. Individuals age 7 – 14 must be accompanied (present in the archery center) by an adult.

Renewal Process

An individual may renew their utilization status up to 90 days after the expiration of their status by meeting the following criteria:

  1. Complete a SSEC Renewal Application.
  2. Complete a statewide criminal background check consent form.
  3. Successfully complete and pass the statewide criminal background check.
  4. Specify the firearm for which they desire authorization. (Type, Make, Model, and Caliber)
  5. Specify the bow for which they desire authorization. (Type, Make, Model)
  6. Pay the $20 renewal fee.

 
*If the request for renewal is received 91+ days after the expiration date, then the individual must complete the full criminal background check.
