SSEC Success Stories

Hey guys! I’m Amanda — a 1906 scholar, President of the Archery Club, and SSEC instructor!

I first started shooting when I was about 11 years old. I actually chose to attend Georgia Southern because of the Shooting Sports Education Center (SSEC) and started working here during my freshman year. I’ve since become the President of the Archery Club Sports team, as well, which has been a blast!

When I first took over as president, we had less than five members. Now, we have more than 20 members on our roster. It’s been awesome to see that growth in the team and all of my teammates. I love seeing everyone excited to be a part of the team, to be shooting and to be welcomed. We’ve worked really hard to make our club a family and it’s definitely paid off!

I coach the younger kids who attend SSEC’s classes and it’s my favorite part of the job. Being able to watch them grow and succeed and to develop into better archers and better people is amazing. Seeing them become passionate about shooting sports fuels my passion, too! It’s awesome to be able to foster a kind of family environment with people who enjoy archery — my involvement here has made me begin to consider a career in shooting sports!

I, unfortunately, had a shoulder injury at the beginning of the year and haven’t been able to shoot until just recently. When I picked up my bow for the first time in months, I felt instant relief — archery helps me decompress from my stresses and I’m so glad the SSEC is here to help me do that!

Hey, I’m Walker Summers!

“I’m a member of the Shotgun Team, as well as an employee at the Shooting Sports Education Center (SSEC). The SSEC has given me the opportunity to try so many different things. As a member of Club Sports, we get to travel around, see new places and experience new disciplines to shoot.

Working at the SSEC has been a huge blessing. My supervisors are constantly challenging me, wanting me to be as good as I can be. They’ve allowed me to take on more of a supervisory role this year, and have encouraged me to pursue more certifications. When I show an interest in something, they make sure I’m able to do it.

As an employee, I’ve had the opportunity to educate individuals and groups through classes, as well as do some public speaking. My position at the SSEC has allowed me to network in the community and meet interesting people. Through working here, I’ve been able to see that I love talking to people and meeting people and keeping up with relationships, which has solidified my career choice in a field where I get to have ongoing friendships with a network of people I can rely on. I’ve found somewhere I think I will fit. I wouldn’t have had that epiphany without working here.

Hey everyone, I am Daniel Vos and I am an avid Shooting Sports Education Center patron and a member of the Shooting Sports Club!

I was really excited when I found out Georgia Southern had an on-campus shooting range. I have always grown up around hunting and shooting sports. My family was big into it, but I never really had a place to kind of do it. So when I came to Statesboro, I got involved at the Shooting Sports Education Center and my engagement in the shooting sports exploded.

I was able to branch out and become a significant part of the community and I’ve solidified a lifelong bond with shooting sports because of what I’ve learned and the connections I have made.
Even though I was pretty active before I came to college, getting involved in shooting sports has allowed me to become even more social. Shooting sports allow you to meet a lot of people from different walks of life, different educational backgrounds, etc. and you get to connect. And I joined the Shooting Sports Club here where I’ve had the great opportunity of not only shooting pistol rifles and shotguns but also archery. I’ve been able to experience everything that the SSEC has to offer.

My favorite aspect of the shooting sports club is that we all get together for a love of the sport and brotherhood and competition, and I’ve had many great experiences. And the team pushes me to be my best. It’s a blast when we travel to compete because we try to go in with the mindset of “we might not be the best but, we’re always going to have fun.” Honestly, I encourage people to come out and to experience shooting for themselves because some people like the archery side, some people like the pistol or rifle or shotgun side — I like it all. And the staff are just wonderful there. they have great people who will train you, educate you, and will just guide you along and make sure everyone has a safe and fun time.

Hi guys! I’m Gavin, an avid shooter in SSEC’s archery range!

I’ve been competing in archery most of my life so I was really excited when one of my friends encouraged me to apply for a job at the SSEC when I came to college! I’ve been working here for about 4 years now and it’s really allowed me to do different things.

I teach health and kinesiology classes here at the SSEC which is one of my favorite parts. It’s fun to have a new shooter come in who’s never used a bow and arrow before and watch them get excited to learn something new and realize this is something they enjoy. It’s awesome to see someone’s face light up when everything clicks in their head and they start getting a hang of shooting!

This experience has helped me prepare for my professional career after college, too. Having this responsibility has helped me grow as a leader and understand what it takes to be professional and successful. The work ethic I’ve developed has carried through to all of the other parts of my life and made me more dedicated to the things I spend my time on.

I know I’ll stay involved in archery after college. I’m involved in a local club in my hometown and would like to help with big events — it’s not something I’m ready to give up!
