January 2016 Club Spotlight: Women’s Rugby

Congratulations to Women’s Rugby for being named the Club Sport of the Month for the month of January! Club president, Paloma Trujillo, was interviewed and offered some great information about the club.

DSC_0080-X21. When was your club established at Georgia Southern University and what is the tradition your team has?

Women’s Rugby at Georgia Southern University was established in the 90s. As a tradition at the end of every spring semester we hold rookie games. These games are the “right of passage” from being a Rookie to becoming a Vet. They’re lots of fun and another opportunity for team bonding.

2. Why do you like playing club sports at Georgia Southern University?

I like participating in club sports at Georgia Southern because I get to enjoy playing the sport I love with people who share my passion. Club sports also allows you the flexibility to join other organizations as well as the discipline to keep me active.

Being able to travel with club sports is such a rewarding experience because you get to engage in actual team travel allowing you to get to form lasting relationships with other teams as well as memories with your own team.

4. What is your best memory while playing in tournaments and competitions this semester?
(Our season just started so not many memories have been made yet) BUT last semester we were able to travel to Florida State University and we were able to play their team. It’s always interesting to see the dynamic of other teams as well as having the opportunity to visit other campuses.

All you have to do is show up at practice! or contact one of our officers. We are more than happy to answer any questions and clear up any misconceptions that anyone may have about women’s rugby here at Georgia Southern.

6. How can they find out more information? Are there tryouts?
You can find out more information by going to our website (gsuwomensrugby.weebly.com) or by visiting any of our social media websites: Facebook, twitter, Instagram @gsuwomensrugby. There are absolutely NO TRYOUTS, everyone who wants to come out and play an awesome sport is welcome!

7. Does your team have any recent special achievements? If so, what are they?
Last year we went through a transitioning period which has shown major improvement for our club. Now three of our officers are level 2000 coaches allowing us to have more one-on-one coaching.
